Celebrate Global Youth Service Day [GYSD] is an annual global event led by Youth Service America with the Global Youth Action Network as its key partner, together with a consortium of 34 international organizations and more than 150 national coordinating committees. Liberty 4 Africa (L4A) is among the national coordinating committees [NCC] and to organize this celebration every year. Our first participation in GYSD 2003 was Delta State, Nigeria.

Liberty 4 Africa (L4A) encourages everyone to be part of GYSD future events. Your help is needed to make this event a remarkable one!

A three-day program was chosen for Global Youth Service Day 2003. The city of Warri, Delta state, Nigeria carried out the following activities: a march for peace and AIDS awareness (at least 30 people marched), and a football match for peace. The activities were limited due to political elections in Nigeria around the time for the celebrations and this coincided with the planned lecture on peace and conflict resolution.
Due to the elections, it had to be cancelled. Another limitation was that the city of Warri had been engaged in serious inter-tribal conflicts just two months before this year’s GYSD celebration. This led to millions of properties destroyed and thousands of lives impacted, which limited the number of participants in GYSD. The football match was honored with the distinguished Chairmanship of Miss Mirjam Vloedgraven (Holland) Volunteer Aid Program Manager. This was highly successful and remarkable due to the efforts of two football clubs. POLAVIS and TOPSTAR Football Club of Warri, Delta State, participated in the GYSD celebrations. Approximately 60 people were actively involved in the celebrations from different institutions and organizations and many people were reached by the celebrations.
